Bluegrass Sundays! 1-5 PM

We have a new Board for "Joe Herbert's Blue Grass Shows in The Shenandoah Valley" - Click Here >>>

Special thanks to the fabulous Rinard Family who really put on a great show this past Sunday.  Running through a broad range of country and gospel songs, interspersed with originals by several members, The Rinards showed a great deal of talent on stage.  With featured vocalist Pam Uhl on board to help out, the Rinard Family never disappointed, and had the regulars up and dancing with their infectious groove.  This free show was the perfect way to end a nice Thanksgiving weekend.

This Sunday, it's back to the Bluegrass-
Amanda Murphy and the Lost Indians make their return to the Strasburg Theater this Sunday afternoon, with special guests Sound Roots on board to kick things off at 2 pm.

Next week, there's a band coming out that Amanda works with. They feature an additional female vocalist, Zena Barakat, and one amazing group.  Called "By and By", this bunch has been ripping up the scene in NVA and DC, and they'll be marking their debut at the theater. They're at myspace.com/byandbyband

The Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass Shows have been making a very solid impression on a lot of new folks, and it's always nice to talk with them.  We've been having visitors from Washington, DC, Charlottesville, across the borders in Maryland and Pennsylvania, not to mention deepest West Virginia.  These folks all vary in age and background, but everybody says the same thing- what an amazing venue! With a bit more publicity, coupled with the existing word of mouth, we should be seeing some very respectable crowds by the time football season is over.
* I doubt we'll be having any shows on Super Bowl Sunday ; )

For those of you who've been asking, we should have some flyers ready at this week's show.  I've been pushing to get us mentioned on WAMU radio, out of American University, and they've been kind enough to help us out.  Les Irby continues to be a pillar of the Bluegrass Community over at 96.9 WSIG, and is always willing to chat about the local and regional talent coming through our community. Tune in every Saturday from 3-9 and on Sunday afternoons as well.

Hopefully, we'll be seeing a few more national Bluegrass acts coming to the theater for some bigger shows.  I've heard requests for Doyle Lawson, Tim O'Brien, The Bluegrass Brothers, Nothin' Fancy and a whole bunch of others.

Tell a friend.

See you on Sunday.

~Joe

ps: Starship Ed has been putting together some very interesting projects on Saturday afternoons.  Independent and rare films, live musical soundtracks to silent classics, art shows, and all manner of goings on.  Check out the calendar and tune in for some of that.  It's an 'alternative to the mundane' and I say it's about time we had something like this in the area!

special thanks to the Gold Heart Bluegrass Band who played this past Sunday afternoon. Consisting of three sisters ranging in age from 12 to 17, these girls put on quite the show and had everyone asking when they'll be back. (Check the calendar for return engagements)
Gold Heart was just phenomenal, and the vocal arrangements were nothing short of spectacular. I only wish we had the CD recorder on board, so we could be listening to this band right now.

Last week, the fellas from Flint Hollow also put on one heck of a show, and really knew how to work that stage mic!  Rumour has it they'll be coming back for a repeat performance.

A lot of you were asking for new flyers.  I've sent in the updated show information, and I'm told that they'll be printed up soon.  In the meantime, please check the calendar for upcoming dates.

This Sunday, we have a very special FREE SHOW, to celebrate the family during your Thanksgiving Holiday.  The Rinard Family, a well known singing and performing group based in Mt. Jackson, VA will be playing some family-friendly country and gospel tunes for your enjoyment.  This is a one-time only show, with free admission for all.  Tell your friends and neighbors.  It's all happening at the Strasburg Theater every Sunday afternoon from 2 - 5 PM.

For bookings or contact information on the Sunday Bluegrass Series, email strasburgbluegrass@hotmail.com

Thanks, Lester. That was indeed an amazing show, and the Deer Creek Boys are obviously on their way to the top.  Even the guy who always complains about everything had to admit- these guys were the real deal.  Hard to believe that most of them are barely out of high school.

Once again, Robbie did a great job on sound, and the DCBz were all thrilled with how it came out.  I'm gonna try and get this music played on the weekly bluegrass show with Les Irby (96.9 WSIG radio) this Saturday afternoon.

We're looking forward to another solid turn out for Flint Hollow coming this Sunday, November 11th.  Folks, if you like bluegrass, tell your friends to come on out every Sunday afternoon between 2 and 5 pm.  Great price, a big, spacious theater with good food, full bar and very talented Bluegrass bands, all right here in Strasburg, VA.

For booking or other information, email strasburgbluegrass@hotmail.com

It was another exciting, fantastic-sounding bluegrass show at the Strasburg Theater this Sunday afternoon. "Amanda Murphy and the Lost Indians" put on a terrific performance, covering many of the old time traditional Bluegrass favorites, as well as some of the more 'contemporary' songs.  Highlights included "Oklahoma" and "When You Say Nothing At All", both beautifully rendered tunes featuring the sweet clear vocals of Amanda Murphy.  Other peaks included a blistering version of "Shady Grove and the old Johnny and June Carter Cash hit "Jackson", sung in fine duet fashion by Murphy and her accomplished dobro player 'Terry', who also handled lead vocal duties on several tunes.

As a matter of fact, Murphy's band, Tiffany Tavern mainstays "The Lost Indians" seemed to just be on fire up there, cranking out song after song with barely a 5 minute break in between sets.  With a line up of banjo, dobro, fiddle, bass and guitar, this group came to flat out play, and that they did, seeming to sum up more and more energy as the afternoon wore on.

Opening act "Sound Roots" once again came through with a well played and well thought out set of appalachian mountain music, mixed with both traditional and gospel bluegrass numbers that had the people clapping and swinging to the beat. SR members Bob and Tonia McConchie were joined by daughter Amanda for some timeless songs that put everything into perspective.  The opening set gave way to an open 'jam' session, that featured as many as seven players on stage at once.

With the fall weather swiftly approaching, the Strasburg Theater is the perfect location for all your bluegrass needs.  Check out the calendar of events for more information on all of the bluegrass bands lined up through the fall.

I want to thank Les Irby of WSIG radio 96.9 for all of his help and support for these Bluegrass Sunday Afternoons.  Les has had me on his radio show for the past month, where he's all about getting the word out on everything that's happpening at the theater.  I'm happy to announce that Les will be serving as emcee for the upcoming Ralph Stanley show on Friday, October 19th.  We also have a wonderful opening act in "Thrashen Hollar", so this is going to be one heck of a show.

Thrashen Hollar features several of the Bynaker Boys, whose Dad started the whole bluegrass scene here in the Shenandoah Valley. They're all mighty proud to be performing on the same stage as Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys.  Doors open at 6 pm, with two separate dinner seatings. Get your reserved tickets online, or by calling the theater's box office at 540-465-1777.

Next week, we have a very special bluegrass band called Chesham Creek, bringing a great deal of Virginia heritage to their musical selections.  Featuring a brilliant line up of amazing musicians, Chesham Creek is sure to entertain and enlighten their audience.  Come on out this Sunday and every Sunday for the best in quality bluegrass and gospel bluegrass.  It's all right here at the Strasburg Theater!

Last minute change in the lineup for this week's Bluegrass Show- we now have the fabulous 'Packway Handle Band' from Athens, GA taking the stage around 3 pm.  Opening up the festivities will be Herb Manila and Mike Hanson of "Over Under Down Yonder".

If you were at The Hackensaw Boys' show a few months ago, you're really gonna dig the Packway Handle Band.  These guys are not only talented, but entertaining and a whole lot of fun.  They've shared the stage with so many big shots in the industry, it's not even funny.

Also, our new start time is 2 pm, so spread the word.  Everyone's been having a blast at the Bluegrass Sunday shows, so why shouldn't you?  (oh yeah, we will be playing the football games on two screens, so you won't have to miss your game updates).

See you there!

Joe

This past week saw another wonderful performance at the Strasburg Theater's Bluegrass Sundays showcase. Tonia and Bob McConchie started things out with a warm and wonderful set of bluegrass, gospel and appalachian mountain music, setting the tone for what was to come.

Around 2:30, our friends from Thrashen Hollar took the stage and really delivered a hard-charging energy packed set of beauties.  This 7 piece Shenandoah Valley outfit had a fantastic lineup that featured all the bells and whistles: 2 guitars, mandolin, banjo, stand up bass, fiddle and dobro! And what a show it was.  In short, Thrashen Hollar really put in on the group of folks who turned out for this, the third week of our Bluegrass Sundays event.

With a fine range of vocalists, all willing to take or give up the spotlight during any song, Thrashen Hollar trotted out a stellar collection of well- played and well- arranged songs for the listeners to enjoy.  Though the crowds can still be considered a bit sparse, every week there's been an increase in attendance, and I think it's only a matter of time until folks come to realize what a special thing we have with these shows, right here in our own backyard.

I want to once again thank Les Irby of WSIG radio 96.9 for having me on his radio show live, where we talked about Thrashen Hollar, Sound Roots, Thunder Creek, as well as some of our bluegrass favorites.  Les even helped us give away 6 tickets to the Sunday performance!  He was happy to inform the listening audience that he'd be playing some of the bands (like Thunder Creek) who've graced our Stage over the past several weeks.  Les has been supporting all things bluegrass, gospel and country in the Shenandoah Valley and beyond for a good many years now, and he's been a great ally in our quest to get the word out.

I really think the bluegrass sundays shows can catch on, provided the bands have enough support to keep it rolling.  If you're looking for something to do on a lazy sunday afternoon, head on over to the Theater for an easy lunch, some amazing bluegrass, all for only 5 bucks! AND you can even watch the Redskins game on several TV screens- while listening to the finest bluegrass music in the land!

For more info on Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass shows, visit the website at email strasburgbluegrass@hotmail.com or simply call 540-975-0813 and we'll see about getting your band on this fabulous stage.

Next week, don't miss an amazing band hailing all the way from the great state of Michigan: GreenSky Bluegrass! With special guests from Over Under Down Yonder, this is going to be quite the performance, people, and it's all right here for a meager $5 bones.  So get on out to the Strasburg Theater for the best Bluegrass music anywhere!

"Bluegrass Sundays" started off this past week with a sparse but vocal and appreciative audience singing and clapping along to the wonderful music of "Sound Roots".   I'd like to send out a very special thank you to Bob and Tonia McConchie, daughter Amanda and all their musical friends for coming out and getting us started with the Bluegrass Sundays Event.  I'll tell you, this family-based group really put on a clinic with just amazing finger picking blues, appalachin mountain music, gospel and traditional bluegrass.  Alternating between mandolin, banjo, and guitar, you never knew which member was going to be playing what. And Amanda really showed 'em what for on that fiddle too!  What a great way to kick things off.

Next Sunday, September 2nd: Thunder Creek!

Wait'll you get a load of these guys!  This Sunday afternoon, September 2nd, the Bluegrass and Gospel Bluegrass Showcase continues with a fantastic band based out of Southeastern VA: Thunder Creek!  I was fortunate enough to view an advance copy of their DVD recorded live at Kitty Hawk, NC and boy, lemme tell you, these guys are as tight as a funeral drum.  Thunder Creek is going to surprise and delight their audience with tight harmonies and incredible jamming skills.

AND we have some very special guests opening up the show: Middletown's own "Way Station"! That's right, many of you know the Way Station (formerly the Wolfe Family) from past bluegrass events, including an incredible opening stint with the great Del McCoury.  Winners of countless bluegrass titles, Way Station have shared the stage with some of the biggest and best in the business.  Led by banjo prodigy Buddy Wolfe, they'll be setting that stage on fire with their superb picking and singing!

The Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass Shows begin at 1 pm and run until around 5.  The cost is only $5 for adults and $3 for kids.  We'll have food and beverages available, and plenty of room to move around.  This is an all- ages, non-smoking event. Please make plans to bring the entire family.

If you'd like to check out Thunder Creek, simply cut and past this link:

For information on special discount rates, call 540-975-0813.

Greetings, Bluegrass and Gospel Music fans!

I have some wonderful news to share with you, and I hope that youll be as excited as I am to be a part of it.  In the past few weeks, Ive been in contact with the owners of the Strasburg Theater, and theyve given me the go-ahead to put together a very special Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass and Gospel Music event.  This show will feature some of the very finest Bluegrass and Gospel Bluegrass groups on the circuit, and will take place every Sunday afternoon, from 1 Pm until 5 Pm, right here at the Strasburg Theater.

These very special Sunday afternoon shows will be completely SMOKE FREE, and will be designed with the entire family in mind.  Many of you have noticed the decrease in family centered events, and I believe that this will be a wonderful opportunity to bring the family together again. Come sit back and relax, enjoy a nice lunch, and listen to the music that made this part of Virginia famous.

We have some fantastic groups lined up for these Sunday afternoons, and the admission fee will be kept at a very reasonable rate.  Well also have special discount rates offered for Church and Civic groups whod like to attend.

A brief background on the Strasburg Theater.

Originally called The Home Theater, this 500 seat capacity theater is located in the heart of Strasburgs downtown district.  With a varied and storied background, the Theater has served in a wide variety of ways, from rock concerts to Bluegrass show, cultural events, - even professional wrestling!  The current owners have put a great deal of their own money into refurbishing the venue, and you can tell when you walk through the doors.  There is a full restaurant, which will offer food and refreshments, so you wont have to run home and cook a big meal. The show is kid-friendly, though we do ask that you keep watch over their behavior.

I am happy to have this opportunity to bring bluegrass and gospel bluegrass back to the Theater, and I believe that Sunday afternoon is the ideal time to enjoy this type of music. Most Church services let out around noon, and the shows will begin at 1:00 pm.  We will feature one main headliner, with occasional opening acts, joke tellers or family entertainers tossed into the mix.  My vision is to model this event on the famous Grand Ole Opry, where folks would come to relax, get together with their families and listen and clap along to the bluegrass and gospel music weve come to love and miss.

Please take a moment to spread the word, and plan to attend our first Bluegrass Sunday Event on Sunday, August 26th, 2007.  Appearing at our very first show will be the fantastic Sound Roots -a family of performers based out of Woodstock, VA.  Sound Roots covers Appalachian Mountain music, as well as traditional Bluegrass and Gospel Bluegrass.  Also on the bill, Southern Sounds of Grass based out of Harrisonburg, VA.  Both of these bands are sure to leave their audience clapping along and clamoring for more.  As an added surprise, we will have the fantastically talented banjo player Buddy Wolfe joining in the festivities.

On Sunday, September 2nd, we have the beautifully rendered vocal harmonies and spectacular jamming of Thunder Creek performing for you.  Quite honestly, I think youll be amazed and delighted with their sound.  On September 9th, we have Thrash N Hollar, a Mt.Jackson based outfit, making quite a name for themselves on the Bluegrass circuit.  But theres more - Flint Hollow, The Shenandoah Bluegrass Boys, 5 of a Kind, Dead Mens Hollow and All 4 Hym are just some of the fine groups whove thrown their hats into the ring!

I really hope that youll come out and support this family centered event.  Admission fee is only $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for kids under 12.  Please make plans to attend, and well see you all on Sunday!

Joe Herbert, Bluegrass Event Promoter

Note: If you are with a Church or Civic Group, or if youd like to be a part of the featured entertainment for Bluegrass Sundays, please call 540-975-0813, or e-mail strasburgbluegrass@hotmail.com
